Friends, I cannot believe it is August. I feel like I say that every month but this one is actually catching me off guard. I feel like I was just in Mexico City, and now the boys and I are headed to London, and somehow it is already August and I have no idea how that happened.

I had fatigue that sleep didn’t even begin to touch. I had sugar cravings like I hadn’t felt since struggling with an eating disorder. And I had weight my body was holding onto like its life depended on it.

That bloodwork changed how I move through my days. I made some health and lifestyle changes that have consistently worked for me and almost one year later, I am in the best shape of my life–at the ripe old age of 45. So I’m laying out the five things that actually moved the needle for me, and what I still do now to keep my cortisol from creeping back up.

I want to say this up front: I’m not a doctor and this isn’t a protocol. It’s what worked for my body. Always consult with your doctor or trusted professional.

First, what is cortisol and why is it important?

Cortisol is your body’s main stress hormone. Your adrenal glands release it any time your body senses a threat, whether that’s a work deadline, an argument, or an actual emergency.

And what happens if your cortisol levels are too high?

In small doses it’s doing exactly what it’s supposed to, it wakes you up in the morning and helps you push through a hard moment, then it’s supposed to come back down. The problem is when it doesn’t come back down. When cortisol stays elevated for weeks or months at a time, your body starts treating everyday life like an emergency, and that takes a major toll.

How to detect?

For me, high cortisol showed up as:

• Hair shedding

• Fatigue that didn’t let up no matter how much I slept

• Weight gain, especially around my midsection, that wouldn’t budge

Cortisol isn't part of a standard blood panel. If you suspect yours might be high, you have to specifically ask your doctor to test for it. I had to request mine. ALWAYS advocate yourself.

Friends, I just got back from Mexico City with my sister and I am still thinking about everything I ate there. Traveling does something to me in the kitchen. I always come home with my head full of flavors and some serious inspiration. This week’s plan doesn’t have a Mexican recipe in it, but the energy is there.

One of the dinners was inspired directly from my trip to Japan last year. There’s also 20-minute orange chicken that is SO saucy and beats takeout every single time. YUP, I said it. Every. single. time.

Lunch is a watermelon poke bowl. It’s perfect for summer and a nice change in the typical lunch rotation. The breakfast is something you can make on Sunday and freeze if you wish, and the snack comes together in 10 minutes and is great for any time you need a quick snack that goes with just about everything.

When I say that these are truly the Best Ever Croissant Breakfast Sandwiches, I mean it. Plus, these sandwiches can easily be prepared ahead of time, making them the perfect meal-prep recipe. Make sure to follow the meal-prep instructions if you’re going that route!

We weren’t there very long, but we packed a lot into a few days, so I’m walking you through exactly where we stayed and everywhere we ate — plus a few things worth knowing before you go. Save this for when you’ve got a trip to Mexico City in your future, because you’re going to want it.

The flight from San Francisco really wasn’t that bad — just about 4 hours, and we landed with plenty of daylight left. The first thing I wanted when I got to the hotel was a cocktail, and you can’t go wrong with a margarita to kick things off.

We stayed at Las Alcobas in Polanco, and it could not have been a better “home” base for us. The hotel itself was so cute, tucked right in among all the luxury shops in the neighborhood, and the hospitality was a 10/10 from the second we walked in. We had breakfast at the hotel restaurant, Anatol, every single morning—those steak chilaquiles were an absolute highlight! I’m STILL thinking about them.

Good to know: Las Alcobas is a Luxury Collection property, so if you have Marriott Bonvoy points or status, they’ll apply here. It’s a short walk to the main shopping strip on Avenida Presidente Masaryk, which makes it easy to explore on foot from the hotel. Anatol is open to hotel guests for breakfast.

For dinner, we headed to Restaurante Rosetta where I’d highly suggest ordering the cabbage tacos and the filet mignon. So many of you recommended this spot, and it turned out to be so cute inside, with seriously incredible food. Thank you so much for an excellent recommendation!

Good to know: This is the Polanco location of Rosetta (there’s also one in Roma Norte inside a converted mansion). Reservations are recommended, especially for dinner on a weekend. Expect a moderate-to-high price point for CDMX.

We started the day at Taqueria Los Oncemil, the only Michelin-starred taqueria in the city, and the A5 Wagyu taco was life-changing — I can see why it holds that title.

Good to know: Los Oncemil doesn’t take reservations, so plan to arrive early or expect to wait, especially at peak lunch hours. It’s counter-service style, and the wagyu tacos sell out. If that’s the one you’re going for, don’t save it for last.

After that, we walked around the city for hours because we were so full. That ended up being one of my favorite things about the city. It really seems to be a city you can visit without too much of an agenda—just wander and something beautiful or delicious is around every single corner. Or, something beautiful AND delicious!

When we needed a break from all the walking, we stopped at Testarudo Café for a much-needed coffee.

From there, we went to Havre Studio for custom vintage blazers, and I’m completely in love with mine. This place was made famous by Hailey Bieber, and yes, I’m coming home with a couple of custom blazers that I am so excited to wear.

For dinner, we went to Máximo Bistrot, and it’s another meal I’ll be thinking about for a long time. The vibes were immaculate, and it was another life-changing (I know, I know) meal. You have to get the chicken — it’s somehow SO crispy and melts in your mouth at the same time. Also, I’ll be dreaming about that ceviche for the next year.

Good to know: Book this one well ahead of your trip — it’s one of the harder reservations in Roma Norte. Tasting-menu-adjacent pricing.

We started the morning at Panadería Rosetta, which is the perfect place for pastries and coffee (or matcha). We loved the guava roll so much and it did not disappoint.

After a little more shopping, we worked up an appetite and headed to Tacos Del Valle for more incredible tacos. I’d highly recommend the carne asada tacos.

We took a cocktail break at Soho House, where a spicy margarita was, of course, the obvious choice. It was the perfect way to slow down for an hour before getting ready for our last dinner.

For our final dinner, we went to Contramar, and it was one more life-changing meal to close out the trip. The tuna tostadas and the split fish are where it’s at, and I will never be the same again.

I don’t know about you, but one pan dinners are where it’s at. If I can make an entire meal in a single skillet or on a single sheet pan and have minimal dishes to wash at the end of the night, I have won. That is what we call peak weeknight cooking and I will not be taking questions.

One pan meals are not only less clean-up (yay!), but they actually can make the flavors even better. When the chicken sears in the pan and then the rice or orzo or pasta cooks in those same juices, it only enhances everything. The flavors just continue to build on top of each other.

So, in the name of making your weeknights easier, I’ve put together 10 amazing one pan meals—orzo dishes, rice dishes, and even some gnocchi. Let me know in the comments which one you’re going to try first!

• A large skillet or sauté pan. The workhorse of this list. It needs to be deep enough to hold liquid and protein without boiling over. If you don’t have one, it will change your life.

• An oven-safe skillet or cast iron pan. A few of these go from stovetop to oven. Make sure whatever pan you’re using can handle it before you put it in.

• A good pair of tongs. For searing chicken and flipping things without losing the sauce.

• A baking sheet (plus parchment paper).

• A meat thermometer. Almost everything here is chicken-based. Knowing exactly when it hits 165°F means perfectly juicy chicken every single time.

• Meal prep containers. Most of these hold up great in the fridge for days. Having good airtight containers is a must.

Friends, making recipes is literally my job. And because of that, I don’t always get to linger on them as much as I’d like to. I’m always moving on to the next thing, developing the next recipe, filming the next video, and so on.

But that doesn’t mean I don’t dream about revisiting them all the time. There’s always the recipes I DO keep coming back to or the recipes that I know instantly they’ll become the ones I’ll keep coming back to in the future.

I have two fairly new recipes this week that I’m so excited to share with you. Friends, I understand being a cottage cheese skeptic. There are moments where it CAN sound a little insane and I wouldn’t blame you for scrolling on by. But, TRUST me. Cottage cheese is one of the most useful ingredients in my kitchen. It’s high in protein and truly does disappear into whatever you put it in.

Of course, you don’t have to “hide” it if that’s what you prefer, but the point is that you CAN. You can blend it and it becomes a creamy dressing. Friends, I have a theory that the best Father’s Day is one where the dad in question gets to eat exactly what he wants and nobody makes a reservation.
