There’s something so magical and nostalgic about summer reading. Maybe it’s the way the sun warms you and hits your page just right, or how a good story somehow feels more alive when you're barefoot and sipping something iced. This summer, I’m trading mindless scrolling for page-turners that stir the soul, spark the imagination (and joy), and keep me up way too late. Whether you’re craving an emotional gut punch, a spicy romance, or some non fiction to make the brain wheels turn—you’ll find something in this list. These are the books that made me feel something this year, and I think they’ll move you all the way through summer.
1. Notes on Your Sudden Disappearance by Alison Espach
This book hurts in the best way possible. An incredibly moving story about love, grief, and growing up in the shadow of loss. The story is told with such a haunting beauty it lingers long after the last page is turned. It’s not just a novel—it’s a deep inhale and an even deeper exhale. If you’re craving something raw and real that still holds your hand while breaking your heart, this is it.
2. Verity by Colleen Hoover
Now I know everyone is familiar with Colleen’s work, but Verity is a whole new level. This is not a fluffy romance piece– from the first page this story grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. It's dark, twisted, and seriously addictive. Hoover effortlessly peels back the curtain on obsession and secrets in a way that makes you question everything. I easily consumed this in one sitting, and I would advise you to do so with a glass of wine and the lights on!
3. Quicksilver by Callie Hart
I have never been the biggest fan of fantasy, but after so many recommendations I had to give Quicksilver a try. This book is all the tension of slow-burn romance with the added intrigue of a psychological thriller. I found the fantasy in this book to be incredibly digestible, with lore that is clever and fascinating. It’s sharp, seductive, and I found myself unable to put it down. Perfect for fans of layered love stories with a gritty edge and strong female leads who know how to fight for what—and who—they love.
4. Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt
Remarkably Bright Creatures is the book you didn’t know you needed! This story is like a warm hug from the universe, with a grieving widow, a curious teenager, and—yes—an octopus who might just be the wisest character of them all. It’s a tender, quirky, and surprisingly profound read that leaves you with a little bit more faith in humanity (and can’t we all use some of that). If you need a reminder that connection is everything, this is your sign to dive in.
5. Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score
This book is pure corny romance and I LOVE IT. A runaway bride, a grumpy small-town guy, and a wild ride of messy love filled with unexpected second chances. This is the book equivalent of a warm summer night sitting by the lake. It’s got spice, heart, and plenty of laughs—summer escapism at its best. The best part? It’s book 1 of 3 in this series and ALL of them are pure page turners.
6. When Women Were Birds by Terry Tempest Williams
Moving. That is the first word that comes to mind when I think of this novel. Williams’ mother left her fifty four blank journals when she passed—and the narrative that unfolds from those blank pages is a lyrical meditation on voice, womanhood, and the power of silence. It reads like a whispered conversation between generations, making the story feel sacred and private- channeling the deep inner thoughts in your mind to bravely step forward. If you’re in a season of self-reflection or reclaiming your truth, this book will feel like sacred medicine.
7. Circe by Madeline Miller
Circe is a book I believe everyone should read. This novel demonstrates the power of the written word, telling the story of an ancient goddess, reimagined. Circe is pure feminine power wrapped in poetic prose. It’s a story about transformation, isolation, and choosing your own strength—even when the world tries to pry it from you. Mythology lovers, this one is hypnotic and unforgettable.
8. Let Them by Mel Robbins
Mel Robbins has been an inspiration to many, including myself, for years. If you’ve ever felt the weight of trying to control how others perceive you—this book is your champion. In her authentic no BS style, Robbins reminds us that inner peace comes when we stop chasing approval and start choosing ourselves. It’s empowering, wildly practical, and exactly what your soul needs if you’re ready to let go of the noise and live loudly.
9. Lilith by Nikki Marmery
The first woman— many do not know that before Eve, there was Lilith. The story of Lilith is one that I relate to- a fierce, defiant, strong woman who was shunned and exiled for refusing to obey the laws of tradition. Her story becomes a reclaiming of feminine rage, resilience, and unity. This book illustrates the true power of women supporting women. It is an absolute must read if you're craving something mythic, feminist, and perspective changing.
10. Strangers to Ourselves by Rachel Aviv
Non fiction is not for anyone, but I promise you that Strangers to Ourselves is anything but dry. Deeply reported and researched, stunningly written, and unlike anything else on this reading list. Aviv explores the edges of identity and mental health through the lens of real people’s lives—including her own. It's intellectually fascinating yet deeply intimate, and it’ll leave you questioning how much of your story you truly understand. For when you want to stretch your mind and your heart.

Summer reading is one of the healthiest and easiest ways to take a minute for yourself, get some fresh air, and refresh. I hope the books on this list help you get a little summer escape in your mind.
xoxo,
Nicole
