3 Days in Mexico City Itinerary

Everything I did, ate, and wore in CDMX.

Friends, every year my sister and I take a short trip together. It’s a tradition we’ve had for years now and something we look forward to each year. This year we picked Mexico City! Yes, I know it can become a little hyperbolic to say everything is life-changing, but I’m still going to say it—my life is forever changed! The culture. The shopping. THE FOOD. I will never be the same and I am already wondering how to plan another trip there.

We weren’t there very long, but we packed a lot into a few days, so I’m walking you through exactly where we stayed and everywhere we ate — plus a few things worth knowing before you go. Save this for when you’ve got a trip to Mexico City in your future, because you’re going to want it.

The flight from San Francisco really wasn’t that bad — just about 4 hours, and we landed with plenty of daylight left. The first thing I wanted when I got to the hotel was a cocktail, and you can’t go wrong with a margarita to kick things off.

We stayed at Las Alcobas in Polanco, and it could not have been a better “home” base for us. The hotel itself was so cute, tucked right in among all the luxury shops in the neighborhood, and the hospitality was a 10/10 from the second we walked in. We had breakfast at the hotel restaurant, Anatol, every single morning—those steak chilaquiles were an absolute highlight! I’m STILL thinking about them.

Good to know: Las Alcobas is a Luxury Collection property, so if you have Marriott Bonvoy points or status, they’ll apply here. It’s a short walk to the main shopping strip on Avenida Presidente Masaryk, which makes it easy to explore on foot from the hotel. Anatol is open to hotel guests for breakfast.

For dinner, we headed to Restaurante Rosetta where I’d highly suggest ordering the cabbage tacos and the filet mignon. So many of you recommended this spot, and it turned out to be so cute inside, with seriously incredible food. Thank you so much for an excellent recommendation!

Good to know: This is the Polanco location of Rosetta (there’s also one in Roma Norte inside a converted mansion). Reservations are recommended, especially for dinner on a weekend. Expect a moderate-to-high price point for CDMX.

We started the day at Taqueria Los Oncemil, the only Michelin-starred taqueria in the city, and the A5 Wagyu taco was life-changing — I can see why it holds that title.

Good to know: Los Oncemil doesn’t take reservations, so plan to arrive early or expect to wait, especially at peak lunch hours. It’s counter-service style, and the wagyu tacos sell out. If that’s the one you’re going for, don’t save it for last.

After that, we walked around the city for hours because we were so full. That ended up being one of my favorite things about the city. It really seems to be a city you can visit without too much of an agenda—just wander and something beautiful or delicious is around every single corner. Or, something beautiful AND delicious!

When we needed a break from all the walking, we stopped at Testarudo Café for a much-needed coffee.

From there, we went to Havre Studio for custom vintage blazers, and I’m completely in love with mine. This place was made famous by Hailey Bieber, and yes, I’m coming home with a couple of custom blazers that I am so excited to wear.

For dinner, we went to Máximo Bistrot, and it’s another meal I’ll be thinking about for a long time. The vibes were immaculate, and it was another life-changing (I know, I know) meal. You have to get the chicken — it’s somehow SO crispy and melts in your mouth at the same time. Also, I’ll be dreaming about that ceviche for the next year.

Good to know: Book this one well ahead of your trip — it’s one of the harder reservations in Roma Norte. Tasting-menu-adjacent pricing.

We started the morning at Panadería Rosetta, which is the perfect place for pastries and coffee (or matcha). We loved the guava roll so much and it did not disappoint.

After a little more shopping, we worked up an appetite and headed to Tacos Del Valle for more incredible tacos. I’d highly recommend the carne asada tacos.

We took a cocktail break at Soho House, where a spicy margarita was, of course, the obvious choice. It was the perfect way to slow down for an hour before getting ready for our last dinner.

For our final dinner, we went to Contramar, and it was one more life-changing meal to close out the trip. The tuna tostadas and the split fish are where it’s at, and I will never be the same again.

If there’s one thing you must know about my sister and I, it’s that we LOVE to shop. Before this trip, we got a ton of recommendations from our most trusted sources about the best places to shop in Mexico City, especially in Roma and Condesa—two neighborhoods known for their independent boutiques and design studios.

If you’re planning your own trip, a few things I’d recommend: book your dinner reservations early, especially for Máximo Bistrot and Contramar, since they fill up fast.
