My Fool-Proof 5-Part Method for the Perfect Christmas Stocking
How to build the perfect Christmas stocking!
If there’s one holiday tradition I take a little too seriously, it’s stockings. I’m not kidding! I look forward to them more than the big gifts under the tree. It’s the first thing my boys see on Christmas morning when they wake up! I love sitting in front of the fireplace before we open the big presents and watching them pull out each little item, showing each other what they got, trading things back and forth, and getting so excited over the smallest surprises.
But over the years, I’ve learned how easy it is to fill a stocking with too much stuff like random candy, little plastic toys that break within minutes, or just things that end up in the trash by New Year’s. I don’t like wasting money on things they’ll forget about the next day, so now I take a more intentional approach. Instead of cramming them full, I focus on just a few thoughtful pieces that actually feel meaningful.
And because I’ve been doing this for a few years now, I feel like a seasoned pro haha! So I wanted to share my fool-proof five-part formula with you, the one that takes all the stress and guesswork out of this extra little Christmas tradition. It’s a simple framework that keeps things fun, intentional, and personal, without going overboard.

My 5-Part Stocking Method
Every stocking gets just five things from one from each of these categories:
1. Something Silly
Because stockings should be fun! I always include one thing that makes everyone laugh! For the kids, it’s usually a toy or something random that keeps them laughing (something that makes funny noises or a squishy item, for example, or a humorous game). For him, it’s lottery scratch-offs (always a hit). For her, maybe a funny mug or a cute beauty tool I know she’ll love.
2. Something Edible
There has to be a treat (it’s a rule). Chocolate, snacks, coffee, whatever feels festive and indulgent. I’ll usually add something seasonal here, like peppermint bark or a favorite candy wrapped in ribbon.
3. Something Educational (or Enriching)
I love adding something that inspires or encourages a quiet moment. For kids, that might be a puzzle or book. My son just learned how to solve a Rubik’s Cube and I think that’s a perfect gift. For adults, maybe a journal, crossword puzzle book, or something wellness-related that sets the tone for a new year.
4. Something Practical
This is the everyday thing they’ll actually use like cozy socks, a new water bottle, skincare minis, a kitchen gadget, or something travel-sized!
5. Something Sentimental
This is always my favorite part. I’ll add something meaningful like a handwritten note, a keepsake ornament, or a small token that represents the year. I saved something for my kids from our Japan trip this year that I can’t wait to add to their stocking, it’s what makes the whole thing feel special
Now that you’ve got the 5-part formula, here’s how you can use it to curate stockings for everyone on your list in the matter of minutes! I pulled some favorites to help you:
For Her:
Something Silly: a fun mug she’ll actually use (I use this one everyday)
Something Edible: her favorite coffee grounds or a cozy seasonal blend
Something Educational (or Enriching): a great read like The Let Them Theory
Something Practical: a Nécessaire skincare set (my personal fav)
Something Sentimental: an engraved necklace she can wear year-round
For Him:
Something Silly: funny pair of socks (classic hit)
Something Edible: fancy hot sauce or a spice rub
Something Educational (or Enriching): a deck of conversation starter cards (for date night or family dinners)
Something Practical: Airtags! The perfect mini gift to attach their keys, wallet, and luggage
Something Sentimental: an engraved whiskey glass with the date
For Kids:
Something Silly: Whoopee Cushion (a guaranteed winner)
Something Edible: hot cocoa bombs or candy (We love Sugarfina)
Something Educational (or Enriching): a puzzle or rubik’s cube (will keep them busy for hours)
Something Practical: a new water bottle, I can’t tell you the amount of times my boys come back to school without their Yeti
Something Sentimental: a personalized ornament with their name and the year (these will be great memories for when they’re older)
For Parents:
Something Silly: a card game
Something Edible: a bottle of nice olive oil, My favorite is from Brightland
Something Educational (or Enriching): My parents would love a coffee table book from the town we grew up in
Something Practical: a luxe hand cream (like Aesop or Necessaire)
Something Sentimental: a mini framed photo of the grandkids or a personalized ornament
For Pets:
Something Silly: a festive holiday bandana
Something Edible: yummy holiday themed treats
Something Educational (or Enriching): interactive puzzle feeder
Something Practical: a new leash or collar
Something Sentimental: a paw-print mold kit
And there you go! Now, instead of stockings that feel chaotic and overstuffed, they feel curated. It’s meaningful gifting without the overwhelm, and that’s my favorite kind of holiday tradition.
I’d love to hear from you guys… what’s the best gift you’ve ever received? It could be something big or small, an experience, or even just a special memory that’s stayed with you. While I love spoiling my favorite people this time of year, the best gift I could ever receive will always be the happiness and health of my family and my boys.
