Traveling with kids to Japan in December (cousins aged 8-16). Would you stay longer in Kyoto or Tokyo?

Gosh that is so incredibly hard. I would do an even split. Can you do 4 days and 4 days? They are so different and I think you will want to explore both equally.

That is so exciting!!! You will have the best time. If you can fly premium economy or business, that would be a great luxury because the flight is long. As far as Japan, make reservations for the special dinners you would like to go to, as they don't do walk-ins at many places.

Your trip started in Tokyo and end in Osaka, would you recommend this or start in Osaka and end in Tokyo?

Love this itinerary! Question, did your travel agent book all the classes and tickets to buildings? While I could prob do it on my own, I have the save reservations about single mom in a country I did not know well.

Train tickets are like that in much of Europe for longer train rides - always keep until you fully exit and are completely out of the subway/metro station because there's always just 'one more turnstile' where you need to insert your ticket or scan your phone (again) to show you paid!

And reading the room when traveling with kids (or tour'ed out spouse)...yep. Sometimes I just can't do everything I'd have done BUT if I want them to travel with me again, I have to compromise but there's that balance especially with dinners where you don't want to miss a single experience - I hear you!
